Centreville is a widespread community officially known as a census-designated place. It lacks the structure of a true city, yet its margins encompass an area of 12.4 square miles and includes approximately 72,000 citizens. It is located about 20 miles west of Washington, DC, making it well within commuting distance for many of its residents.
Centreville’s origins are steeped in the Colonial period when it was known as Newgate. The area seemed to mimic many names and characteristics from the British settlers’ hometowns in England, including a tavern known as the London prison where slaves were sold, and a nearby river named the River Thames. Civil war in the 1860’s saw several battles fought nearby including the First and Second Battles of Manassas and the Battle of Chantilly.
The culturally rich area now is home to wealthy suburban neighborhoods, strip malls, and large housing developments. Although there are family-oriented services like schools, churches and rec centers, the area does not contain vast amounts of industry. That makes the affluent community of Centreville more of a bedroom community.
