Located 25 miles west of Washington, DC, Chantilly is a popular bedroom community for commuters to the big city. The name Chantilly comes from a 19th century mansion and farm from the area, which in turn took its moniker from a plantation in nearby Westmoreland County. A five-acre county park commemorates the hill there the Battle of Chantilly was fought.

Although most industry is performed outside of Chantilly, Ticonderoga Farms, and the headquarters for the National Reconnaissance Office are in the CDP.
