Herndon is the third largest town in Fairfax County with approximately 25,000 residents. The small town has a quiet, rural community feel and encompasses a small area of only four square miles. It is located within a 40 minute drive of the nation’s capital, Washington, DC, which makes it an ideal spot to raise a family without sacrificing nearby amenities.
The town of was named Herndon in 1858. Many Northern soldiers settled in the area which became a hub for dairy production and a hotspot for vacationers. The presence of a nearby railway, the Washington & Old Dominion (W&OD) Railway aided in the town’s development. When the railway was decommissioned and converted to a hiking and biking trail, it was commemorated by converting the train station into a museum. A caboose painted in the W&OD colors is preserved by fond residents.
